But most mutants in these stories before the 1940s were animals or insects and not humans. It confirmed my memory and Gunn’s claims that mutant stories have been around for a long time in science fiction. I double checked the “ Mutants” entry in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. It’s the alien presence of the mutant that matters. A “mutant” plot can be set in the past, present, or future. Gunn says right up front that “the problem of mutations” has no set pattern of protagonist or setting. Mutants don’t seem a plot category but a theme or motif. (And, no, Gunn didn’t throw an exclamation mark in after “mutants”.) We’re at the last subcategory of the “plots of circumstance”. My look at James Gunn’s Modern Science Fiction: A Critical Analysis continues.

Making the case for massive population growth with analytic rigor and imagination, One Billion Americans issues a radical but undeniable challenge: Why not do it all, and stay on top forever? Drawing on examples and solutions from around the world, Yglesias shows not only that we can do this, but why we must. What really contributes to national prosperity should not be controversial: supporting parents and children, welcoming immigrants and their contributions, and exploring creative policies that support growth-like more housing, better transportation, improved education, revitalized welfare, and climate change mitigation. Vox founder Yglesias invites us to think bigger, while taking the problems of decline seriously. The winner in the future world is going to have more-more ideas, more ambition, more utilization of resources, more people.Įxactly how many Americans do we need to win? According to Matthew Yglesias, one billion.įrom one of our foremost policy writers, One Billion Americans is the provocative yet logical argument that if we aren't moving forward, we're losing. We can't compete with the huge population clusters of the global marketplace by keeping our population static or letting it diminish, or with our crumbling transit and unaffordable housing. If the most challenging crisis in living memory has shown us anything, it's that America has lost the will and the means to lead. What would actually make America great: more people. Dictionary lovers will cotton to this mild classroom fantasy, while readers who have a hard time believing that one person could invent a word out of thin air will be surprised to learn that the word ""quiz"" was invented the same way. The Frindle lesson plan contains a variety of teaching materials that cater to all learning styles. Like the Velveteen Rabbit, his well-worn word has become real. Granger was rooting for ""frindle"" all along. With this coup Nick gets a big surprise: the proof that Mrs. Just to get under her skin-and despite her loud protests-he invents the word ""frindle"" and convinces the whole school to use it instead of the word ""pen."" The word spreads to the city, nation and world, and Clements (Big Al) fast-forwards the story by 10 years to show that ""frindle"" has made it into the dictionary. In fifth grade, however, he meets his match in tough language-arts teacher Mrs. Always one step ahead of his teachers, Nick not only can ""feel a homework assignment coming the way a farmer can feel a rainstorm"" but can dream up a distraction to prevent the assignment from being given. She can’t forget her wife, but with time, she can make a new life for herself and the kid, supported by a community of fellow misfits who defy the Department to lift one another up in solidarity and hope. Yet as the kid grows, Kris finds her footing, raising a child whose irrepressible spark cannot be dampened by the harsh realities of the world. Grieving the loss of her wife and thoroughly unprepared for the reality of raising a child alone, Kris teeters on the edge of collapse, fumbling in a daze of alcohol, shame, and self-loathing. Kris is a Shadester and a new mother to a baby born with a second shadow of her own. Within the Department, corruption and prejudice run rampant, giving rise to an underclass of so-called Shadesters who are disenfranchised, publicly shamed, and deprived of civil rights protections. In a United States not so unlike our own, the Department of Balance has adopted a radical new form of law enforcement: rather than incarceration, wrongdoers are given a second (and sometimes, third, fourth, and fifth) shadow as a reminder of their crime-and a warning to those they encounter. The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero The Supernatural Enhancements book. While not as outwardly funny as Meddling Kids or This Body’s Not Big Enough for the Two of Us, he uses humor to comment on the absurdity of life, even when some terrifying, secret society stuff is happening. Told entirely through documents (such as notes, letters, and transcripts of videos and voice recordings, as well as many others), Cantero closely controls the amount of information that the reader receives, keeping you learning things at the same pace as the main characters (for the most part, though he does hold back some vital information as well).Ĭantero is a master of telling a horrifying, scary story while making you laugh out loud and this novel is no exception. /rebates/2f97803855381522fSupernatural-Enhancements-Cantero-Edgar-03855381542fplp&.
